If you’ve been into a Michaels store lately, you’ve probably noticed some big changes. I know my local Michaels has so many cool products right now, and one of my favorite new resets is this “Make Market” which is a combination of home décor and DIY products made of on-trend surfaces and textures, like chalk, denim, burlap, galvanized, cork and metal.
All of the Michaels Makers were asked to create a craft using denim. I love the look of denim in projects especially for the 4th of July. So I guess now is a good time to stock up!
For my denim project, I thought it would be fun to create a little needlepoint project. I’ve never hand-embroidered before, but there’s always a first for everything! I love the idea of alternative fabrics for needlepoint, and I found these denim squares that fit a 3.5″ embroidery hoop perfectly.
3.5″ Embroidery Hoop
I created a simple pattern on my computer with some basic stars and a cursive font. I printed it out and used it as a guide for my stitches (I’m pretty sure this isn’t really how you do needlepoint,ha! So if you’re more of a craft purist, maybe look for some more technical instructions). This worked fine for me, I freehanded some of the stars and all the french knots at the end though because those were super easy. The lettering was the hardest, I used a stem stitch for those.
Such a fun little project and great to get my feet wet trying out some embroidery! Have you crafted with Denim? I’d love to see any fun projects you’ve created using denim or other dark materials. Check out the links below to see what all the other Michaels Makers created this month!
