This picture totally describes our life right now… one large in progress mess! Since we are not yet re-doing the kitchen, the area has become a catch-all in the house (you think this is bad, you should see the garage). But despite the mess, the house is coming along very nicely. The best part right now is that it is looking so incredibly bright with all the wall texture gone. This was kind of a last-minute decision… we were lamenting the orange-peel wall texture and my friend Staci mentioned that in her house she and her mom had smoothed the walls in the master bedroom before she moved in. All they did was use joint compound to fill in the texture gaps of the orange peel and then smooth it with a skim coat. So with that idea in our head, we talked to our drywall guy who said it was indeed possible. So right away we got the scheduling set up for that. Now about a week later, the walls are almost all done, and they look AMAZING. I don’t think a photo would quite capture it, but they have gone from really bad orange peel texture from the 7os to gorgeous smooth and creamy walls. This has also lightened up the house incredibly as all that compound on the wall is so light and its covered up the old dirty paint. It is looking so bright that Mr. Project has decided that his studio should be painted a light color instead of a dark one. So nearly the whole house will be painted a very light warm grey (taupe) with off-white trim and bright white ceilings.
Here is our updated move-in list:
- scrape ceilings
- tear down some unnecessary walls
- remove ALL trim/casings
- add necessary walls (frame, drywall)
- put in recessed lighting, move outlets, fix non-working outlets
- re-texture ceilings and smooth drywall (almost done)
- Completely re-do half bath (in progress)
- Completely re-do master bathroom! (in progress)
- put up new railing on stairs/overlook (parts ordered)
- replace ALL doors (custom doors ready to be hung)
- replace ALL trim/casings + install crown moldings (order will be placed on Monday)
- install all new underlayment (ready to go)
- install all new hardwood flooring (ready to go)
- Prime + PAINT!
Right now our garage is full of the following:
2 awesome Kohler toilets, 10 doors waiting to be primed and painted, 2 palates of pre-finished hardwood flooring, several boxes of floor and wall tile, 30 sheets of really nice plywood for the underlayment (replacing existing particle board underlayment), 30 2×4 for the master bath re-framing, and a whole lotta tools (including Mr. Projects new table saw)
The subway tile in the half bath should be finished today. Here is a progress picture from yesterday afternoon (sorry about the poor quality, its from Mr. Project’s iphone):
The biggest thing on my mind right now is paint color… Its such a hard choice to make. even though it’s easy and cheap enough to change, doesn’t mean you want to change it – especially in the hard to reach areas. I’ve had a serious mild obsession over the color gray the past 6 months or so and hopefully it lasts, because that is what we’re painting the whole house… Here are some inspiration photos to show you just how beautiful Gray can be (and I’m sorry I have no clue where these photos are from, I’ve just been collecting screen shots for the past few months, and I know its poor etiquette, but you all will have to forgive me):
Most of the walls in the house will be painted a very pale warm gray – (at the moment) I’ve decided on Valspar Oatlands Taupe. I haven’t yet decided on the trim color – bright white, grayish white, or cream… bah! The master bedroom will be painted a darker warm gray… right now I’m pretty decided on SLATE from restoration hardware but
I’m also looking at Benjamin Moore’s Waynesboro Taupe.
The only other color will be a pale silver sage in the half bath, guest bath, and my craft room. I’m pretty sure I’m going with Behr Nurture, it’s really pale, but I’m loving subtle neutrals right now (if you can’t tell)
So that’s whats going on right now with The Project House… can you tell I’m having so much fun!
